First United Methodist Church offers a wide variety of Sunday School classes.  There is sure to be one for you!

ACTS (Adults Celebrating The Scriptures)

Leader: Sharon Crissey
Meets in Rokeby Hall
All ages welcome

The ACTS Sunday School class is committed to studying the Scriptures. Various study guides have included "Parables from the Backside," "What the Bible Says About Angels," "The Will of God," and "ACTS doing ACTS" which included activities from the book of Acts. Teaching is shared by members and guest teachers. Recently the class members each presented the life of an apostle for a series of discussions focused on a different apostle each week.

Social functions are held throughout the year and the class undertakes support projects for the church. The class has a discussion format and is composed of singles and couples of all ages. Visitors are always welcome for a Sunday in study.

Bart Peak

Teacher: Rotates among class mem bers, includes lay persons and retired ministers.
Meets in Room 118
Ages: Working and retired couples and singles

Typical attendance ranges from 30 to 40 people. The class uses the Adult Bible Studies from the International Lesson Series. Members demonstrate a concerned interest in and for each other, as well as other members and friends of the church. They observe illnesses, celebrations, birthdays, and anniversaries.

The class enjoys several potluck dinners during the year as well as frequent coffee and refreshment times before class. This class is a fellowship-loving group.

Through the class budget and giving, the class helps support various mission areas, including Nathaniel United Methodist Mission, High Street Neighborhood Center, UMCOR, the Kentucky United Methodist Homes for Children and Youth, Wesley Foundation and Hope Center.

Bible Study Class

This discussion oriented class covers the background, history and contents of the Old and new Testament books and themes. The Bible Study class is designed to meet the needs of those who want a broader understanding of the Bible. The class focuses on characters, events and themes in the Bible.

BLT (Bible Learning & Teaching)

Teachers: Tom Billups, Vickie Heierman & Dulaney Wood
Meets in Rokeby Hall
Ages: 30 and up, singles or couples

This class focuses on Biblical studies, Faith Link, current events and occasional special topics. The format is reading and discussion. The class engages in social activities including participation in the Baby Boomers activities of the church and in various sports programs and service projects.

Christian Family Survival Class

Teacher: Class members
Meets in Room 110
Ages: Parents with children elementary through college

This class focuses on Christian family values in raising children and developing healthy and lasting marital relationships. Through special speakers, video series, book reviews by noted Christian authors and witness, we try to share needs and concerns of Christians living in today’s world.

College & Beyond

Teachers: Various
Meets in the game room on the 2nd floor
Ages: College age students through young adults

This class is designed to meet the needs of young adults who are in the college environment and for those who have completed the campus scene and are currently settling into the career track. The class utilizes the study of God’s word to guide their personal Christian growth. Social and service opportunities are incorporated as this group learns to grow together spiritually and emotionally and become a part of the community of faith and faithful disciples of Jesus.

Contemporary Issues

The format for this class is coffee, pastries and group discussion. The class discussions revolve around a weekly lesson based on a current issue.

Dorothy Hays

Teacher: Ann Asbury
Meets in Room 107 (Ladies Parlor)
Ages: Unlimited


The Dorothy Hays class uses the Adult Bible Series for curriculum. The format is primarily lecture with exchange of ideas welcomed by the teacher.

Faith Issues

Teacher: Class members

Ages: Married & single adults - 20’s, 30’s and 40’s

The class discussion is designed around study material that covers life situational topics and Biblical issues in today’s life-styles. Social functions usually include lunch outings after church service once a month.

Forum

Teacher: Dr. Jim Heidinger
Meets in Room 13
Ages: Men and women 40+

The class studies the books of the Bible in an in-depth format in which the entire Bible is covered over a ten year period. Old Testament and New Testament books alternate in the cycle, so that portions of both are covered each year. The format for the class is lecture, followed by discussion. Social gatherings are usually held about four times a year.

Ages: Unlimited

This class uses the Adult Bible Series. Group discussion is emphasized. Recently this class has enjoyed the Dimensions for Living series by James W. Moore. Social activities include two or three potluck dinners and a Christmas party. These are generally held in the homes of class members. A warm welcome is extended to single adults or couples in any age range who are not presently involved in a class.

Prospects Unlimited

Teacher: Dr. Bill Arnold
Meets in Room 14
Ages: Working singles and couples with children of all ages

Dr. Arnold, a professor of Old Testament at Asbury Theological Seminary, leads Bible study, generally focussing on books/topics from the Old testament. A typical class might include close reading of passages, explanation of historical context, and discussion of application to our lives.

In the summer, class members take turns teaching from self-directed studies. Class members gather socially several times throughout the year and often include children.

Seekers

Teacher: Class members
Meets in the Library
Ages: 40’s and up, couples or singles

Curriculum is chosen by class consensus. The class seeks to apply Christian principles to daily living with emphasis on parenting and family life. Coffee at 9:45 a.m. Lessons begin at 10 a.m.

Dr. Jennings Sunday School Class

Ages: Various

The Bereans

Teacher: Dr. Ben Kibler
Meets in Room 11
Ages: Young adult singles and couples with children through middle school.

This class is a Bible-based moderated discussion of contemporary issues.
