Disciple
Bible Study
Becoming
Disciples Through Bible Study
Disciple is an approach to Bible Study
that emphasizes disciplined reading of, and listening to, Scripture. It
results in biblically nourished persons committed to live as disciples.
During the course of 35 weeks, disciple groups move through the Scriptures
form Genesis to Revelation. All Disciple Bible study participants will
read more than 70 percent of the Bible. The Scripture for each session
follows the chronological movement of the Biblical story. Disciple groups
consist of 12 members and a leader and meet weekly for 34 weeks. Each
participant makes a commitment to daily preparation (30-45 minutes per
day) and weekly attendance at and full participation in the group
sessions. Disciple aims at transformation, not just information. Disciple
calls on persons to submit themselves to examination by scripture, to put
themselves under the power of God's word and to be changed by God's word.
The program builds from one level to another.
Participants begin with level one. Upon completion, you will advance to level
two and then to three.
Class meeting times are determined by the
teacher and the class.

Christian
Believer
Knowing God With Heart And Mind
Christian Believer is a 30-week study
that integrates Scripture and the study of basic beliefs (doctrines) of
the Christian faith (it is not a Bible Study).
Every question about life is a question
about God…
What is Christian Believer?
Christian Believer is a 30-week study
that integrates Scripture & the study of the basic beliefs of the
Christian faith (it is not a bible study). These doctrines and traditions
are rooted in Scripture. Believer concentrates on the classical doctrines
of the Christian faith -- those that emerged in early Christianity as it
struggled to understand its Scripture and its experience of Jesus and that
have remained central to Christian teaching through the centuries. These
basic Christian beliefs distinguish Christians from other people and
Christianity from other faiths. The goal of Christian Believer is to make
available to people the substance of the faith that the church has
confessed as a way of connecting to God and living faithfully.
Participants in Christian Believer will
come to think of the different doctrines as being connected. Like building
blocks, one belief rests on another, leans against another, touches
another; and out of such building blocks of belief come faithful lives and
communities centered in the gospel of Jesus Christ and sent forth by the
Holy Spirit to point others to God.
Each participant in Christian Believer
will receive a study manual and a book of readings. The study manual
provides a reader-friendly format for study of the central teachings of
the Christian faith. The book of readings contains brief selections from
the writings of Christians ancient and modern on the great teachings of
the Christian faith. The reading will give participants glimpses of the
thought and struggle of Christians about their beliefs through the
centuries. Each participant makes a commitment to daily preparation
(approx. 30 minutes daily) and weekly attendance in the group study
sessions.
Consider this opportunity to read &
study the doctrines of the church in a small, committed group.

College Fellowship Ministry
In addition to the College Sunday School class,
we meet every Wednesday night. From 5-6 p.m. each Wednesday, join us for a
FREE (yes, that is right) home cooked dinner. Then, from 6-7:15 p.m. join
us for college activities such as devotion time, sharing time, or mall missions
(we love to go to the mall and just talk and listen to people).
Each week we share our prayer requests via
email. This prayer ministry is a great way to really remember each other
and to pray for others.

Adopt a Student Ministry
This is a new ministry here at First
Church. We really do believe that we are a family, and this is a way for a
college student to be "adopted" by a family in the church to provide a
home away from home: maybe a place to do laundry or to study, a home
cooked meal, kids or pets to play with, or just a listening ear. If you
are interested in being "adopted", please pick up an application at
the church on Tiffany's office door (room 113) or call D.G. Hollums at 858-0522.

Representative
Payee Program
First
United Methodist Church has began a ministry called
Representative Payee Program. This program, run by all
volunteers and coordinated through the Department of Social
Services and the Division of Adult Services of the
Lexington-Fayette Urban County Government, is designed to help
clients handle their finances through providing financial
management for our beneficiaries who are incapable of managing
their payments.
The
Representative Payee Program was established so that elderly, disabled and
other adults with limited incomes could be helped to manage their money.
Under the program a trained officially designated volunteer acts as the
representative payee of the client. The volunteer manages a direct deposit
checking account of client’s funds to pay bills and make purchases, and
monitors the client’s other needs. The volunteer’s liability is
protected by being a local department of social services’ volunteer.
For
additional information, Contact Beth Mills at bethm@lfucg.com.
